Bonemass Can Wait

A new Viking joins, the bears move to a bigger pen, and all seven march on Bonemass. They die 27 times in the bog and never land a hit on him. So the crew goes home and builds a road to the port instead, and Beacon Hill gets a cauldron. Replay the night on the map, or step through it one moment at a time.

19:20 – 22:25

Bears, a cart and a new Viking

The night started at Beacon Hill, which has more bears than it has room for, and with a newcomer who had never played Valheim.

  1. The horse cart, again

    Spenglerian's horse cart has flipped over at Beacon Hill. He breaks it up at 19:32 and 22 seconds later builds a new one 20 m away. He uses it 87 times before the night is out.

  2. A new Viking

    Pekka mäkinen has never played Valheim before. The server turns the first eight tries away, and at 19:45 the new Viking wakes at the spawn stones in rags. Eight minutes later Pekka is at Beacon Hill, kitting out from a chest: Crusherina's troll leather armour, cape and bow, and a troll leather hood of Sfin's making.

  3. A bigger pen

    Spenglerian builds a bigger pen out of stakes, with two gates, and he and Sfin lead the bears over. Sfin has a word with them 31 times in four minutes and names one SpecialBen.

  4. Straight to the swamp

    Twelve minutes after waking in rags, Pekka is at the Swamp Tree, and draws Crusherina's Iron Sword there a minute later. A Draugr kills Pekka at 20:05, a swamp skeleton at 20:09, poison at 20:15 and another skeleton at 20:17. Crusherina dies three times and Sfin once: eight deaths at the Swamp Tree in 16 minutes.

  5. Sushi and Sashimi

    Spenglerian names two tame wolves at Beacon Hill: Sushi and Sashimi.

  6. Noname

    Uggeli names five bears in the new pen in 65 seconds: Noname, Unnamed, Nameless, Not named and Untitled. Pekka adds one called kraahu at 21:14.

  7. The butcher, again

    At Spuggeli's Crossing Spenglerian kills six tame three-star horses in six seconds, and a tame grizzly 26 seconds later. At 21:35 he cooks 20 horse soups and 10 horse sticks. At 22:25 three more tame grizzlies go, in the new pen, in 45 seconds. The herd is smaller now.

21:40 – 22:35

The march on Bonemass

Two weeks ago Uggeli found Bonemass, out past the far end of the bonemass portal. Tonight all seven went through to fight him. They spent 55 minutes dying in the bog on the way, and nobody landed a single hit on Bonemass.

  1. A leech kills Crusherina at the portal: the first of 27
  2. Crusherina again, to a Draugr, and at 21:42 to leeches: three deaths in two and a half minutes
  3. An Abomination in the bog, about 150 m past the portal. Uggeli hits it first, Spenglerian joins in at 21:43:45, and spira lands three. 70 m away, Sfin holds off Draugr and swamp skeletons, at one point on 2.5 health
  4. Pekka: poison, then a fall 68 seconds later
  5. The Abomination is down, the crew's second after Petteri's on 12 October. Spenglerian lands 19 of the 29 hits, Uggeli 7 and spira 3, and nobody dies. Spenglerian, with most of the damage, gets the credit. He picks up 10 roots and 9 guck
  6. A swamp skeleton leaves Crusherina on 0.2 health
  7. Draugr kill Crusherina and Pekka, eight seconds apart
  8. Uggeli: swamp skeletons, his only death of the night
  9. PiÑa drops 35 poison resistance meads at the front, fetched from Spuggeli's Crossing. Spenglerian hands them round: five each to Sfin and spira, and ten into Uggeli's grave
  10. An Oozer's poison: Pekka, and Crusherina eight seconds later
  11. Spenglerian: a Wraith, with an Oozer and a leech helping
  12. Pekka: a Draugr, then a Crawler's poison, then a leech, in under four minutes
  13. Sfin dies at the far end, about 400 m past the portal. This is as far as the march gets
  14. spira: poison, and at 21:58 a fall
  15. PiÑa: a Draugr Elite at the far end, a second after a Wraith kills Crusherina
  16. Crusherina: 144 points of leech poison
  17. PiÑa: a Draugr Elite, then poison, then a fall: three deaths in four minutes
  18. A Draugr kills Pekka for the twelfth time. Pekka logs off 13 seconds after waking, and Crusherina, just killed by a Draugr Archer, three seconds after that

What killed them: Draugr 8, leeches 5, Blobs and Oozers 5, Wraiths 3, falls 3, swamp skeletons 2 and a Crawler. Everyone who went died at least once. The farthest anyone got was PiÑa, about 440 m past the portal.

20:39 – 23:33

The road to the port

Scrap iron can't go through a portal, and there is a lot of it to bring home. The plan: ship it to the port west of Beacon Hill, then bring it the rest of the way by horse cart, on a road. By midnight the road was there: 1,544 pieces, more than the crew had laid in all the earlier nights together.

  1. The dirt road

    Uggeli lays a path west out of Beacon Hill and turns it into a dirt road, 267 pieces, with Sfin clearing trees and rocks ahead of him. At 21:29, 50 minutes after the first piece, it reaches the shore by the port.

  2. Paving

    Spenglerian starts paving over the dirt road. Out towards the port, trolls kill him at 21:11 and again at 21:16, and a minute later spira gets out of the same fight on 1.4 health.

  3. The port

    spira is the first at the port and opens its chest. Sfin reads the runestone there at 21:22.

  4. A cauldron for Beacon Hill

    Back from the bog, and with tin and copper from Uggeli, Spenglerian puts a cauldron down at Beacon Hill. Three minutes later Sfin cooks the first meal in it: four horse sticks. Crusherina starts cooking there at 22:54: 12 bear jerky, 12 horse sticks and 4 horse soups by the end of the night.

  5. An hour of stone

    Spenglerian lays 949 paving stones in the next hour. Uggeli digs 159 copper ore on the hill east of Beacon Hill, and PiÑa raises the ground along the road 45 times.

  6. Tin by the port

    Uggeli finds tin on the shore by the port and digs out 30 tin ore.

  7. Paved

    The paving reaches its west end, 35 m from the port: 1,222 stones and about 520 m of road in two and a half hours.

22:38 – 00:08

The case of the pretty fir

Sfin found some pretty trees by the new road and wanted them kept. PiÑa chopped one of them down, as a sick joke. The facts of the case:

  1. The trees

    The firs stand by the road, about 410 m west of Beacon Hill. Sfin is among them at 22:38.

  2. Five blows

    At 22:51:15 PiÑa starts on one of the firs. Five blows and six seconds later it is down.

  3. The witness

    Sfin is right there. One second before the fir falls, a hit of his own lands on it, for 2.9 damage. Whether he was trying to stop PiÑa, nobody knows.

  4. The cones

    PiÑa picks up the fir's cones and takes swings at two small firs next to it.

  5. The cleanup

    Twenty-seven seconds after the fir falls, Spenglerian clears its stump and its log, one blow each, and at 23:01 paves the road past the spot.

  6. The replacement

    At 23:05 Spenglerian plants a fir sapling where the old one stood, about 2 m from it: the crew's first fir sapling. He logs off at 23:54, before it can grow.

  7. The vigil

    From 23:24 Sfin spends 36 of his last 50 minutes within 25 m of the new sapling. At 00:04 he takes three fir cones from the storehouse at Beacon Hill, and at 00:08 he is back at the sapling with them.

  8. Eight saplings

    At 23:36 PiÑa takes eight fir cones out of the horse cart and plants eight fir saplings, four on each side of the road, about 240 m nearer Beacon Hill.

Verdict

Guilty: one pretty fir, felled in six seconds for a laugh. Spenglerian planted its replacement on the spot, and Sfin kept watch over it. PiÑa's eight saplings count as an apology, though they went in 240 m away.

Glory and shame

Server rule: you may bring an old character and old gear, and the others may tease you for it. Gear that helps the whole server is exempt, and a wolf cape is borderline because it keeps the cold away.

Petteri was away on another real-life quest, almost certainly a software problem with his car. Pekka mäkinen played Valheim for the first time tonight. Welcome to Valhali.

Road-builder, farmer and the butcher

Building: 2,007 pieces, more than three times his old best (613). 1,257 of them are road.
Bad at
Trolls: two deaths to them in five minutes, out on his own road.

Glory

  • Paved about 520 m of road to the port: 1,222 stones in two and a half hours.
  • Did most of the work on the crew's second Abomination: 19 of the 29 hits and 2,153 of the 2,664 damage.
  • Built the cauldron at Beacon Hill, the bigger bear pen, and a new horse cart when the old one flipped over.
  • Planted 290 carrots and 70 turnips at Beacon Hill, the crew's biggest farm yet.
  • Planted a fir sapling where Sfin's pretty fir had stood, then logged off before it could grow.
  • 41 km, the farthest tonight. For the first time in the chronicle, the long walker isn't Uggeli.

Shame

  • The butcher, a third time: six tame three-star horses in six seconds and a tame grizzly at Spuggeli's Crossing, then three tame grizzlies in the new pen in 45 seconds.
  • A Wraith got him on the march to Bonemass.
  • 11 falls, his most in one night.

  • Laid the first road to the port: a path, then a dirt road, 267 pieces from Beacon Hill to the shore in 50 minutes.
  • Tin and copper for Beacon Hill, so the crew could finally cook in a cauldron there.
  • 113 monsters, the most tonight, 56 of them Wild Roots.
  • The fewest deaths tonight: one, on the march.

Shame

  • Sign trouble again: THISTLE on one sign, DANDELION on another. Eleven minutes later the DANDELION sign says THISTLE and the first one just says “...”.
  • For the first time in the chronicle, not the long walker: 31 km to Spenglerian's 41.

Bear-herder and keeper of the pretty trees

  • Cleared the way for the road with Uggeli: 164 chops, his most in one night.
  • Cooked the first meal in the new Beacon Hill cauldron, three minutes after it went up: four horse sticks.
  • Kept watch over the sapling Spenglerian planted where his pretty fir stood, for most of the night's last hour, and came back to it with fir cones.
  • 140 bone bolts and 14 Queen's Jams.

Shame

  • Watched PiÑa fell one of his pretty firs from right next to it.
  • Died to poison at the Swamp Tree before the march, and to swamp skeletons at the far end of it.
  • 12 falls for 131 damage.

Looking after the crew: he fetched 40 poison resistance meads from Spuggeli's Crossing in the middle of the march and dropped 35 at the front for the others.

  • Got farther into the bog than anyone: about 440 m past the portal, hacking at a bone pile.
  • 45 earthworks and 19 paving stones for the road.
  • Planted eight fir saplings along the new road, four on each side.
  • 10 bronze at Beacon Hill to end the night, and three treasure chests opened.

  • Chopped down Sfin's pretty fir for a joke: five blows, six seconds, with Sfin standing next to it. Then he picked up the cones.
