The Leviathan Night

Seven Vikings, two sunken Karves, three castaways on a Leviathan, a tame grizzly, a blueberry thief and two dead Elders. Replay the night on the map, or step through it one moment at a time.

21:27 – 22:10

The wreck at the Leviathan

Three Vikings sail south-west, capsize next to a Leviathan, spend 32 minutes standing on it, and get picked up by PiÑa in a boat built for the purpose.

  1. Cast off

    Spenglerian takes the helm at the dock, Sfin works the sail and Uggeli rides as passenger. At 21:33 the captain hits his own boat with a knife for 27 damage, which is the first recorded attack on it.

  2. Capsized

    About 1.7 km out, next to a Leviathan, the island-sized sea creature, Spenglerian capsizes the Karve and it breaks up. He fishes exactly 30 fine wood out of the water, which is what a wrecked Karve drops. The crew climbs onto the Leviathan.

  3. The Serpent

    A Serpent turns up. All three shoot at it from the Leviathan's back. Uggeli lands 15 arrows and Spenglerian's fire bolt kills it.

  4. Nails and a new boat

    Back at base, PiÑa forges 100 bronze nails and puts down a new Karve at 21:45, on the wrong side of one of the two low bridges over the river. Spenglerian made the exact same mistake an hour earlier. Petteri, online since 21:50, tears down the wrong bridge first, then the right one, while PiÑa pulls its roof off. PiÑa sets sail at 21:58.

  5. Rescue

    PiÑa reaches the Leviathan. The castaways spend 30 seconds hacking chitin off it, though every hit risks making it dive, and climb aboard at 22:08.

  6. Haldor's camp

    PiÑa drops them at Haldor, who was only 260 m from the Leviathan all along. A Greydwarf Elite gets Uggeli down to 10 health and Sfin to 12 before Spenglerian kills it.

23:41 – 23:49

Two Elders in eight minutes

Spenglerian found the altar by boat at 23:08 and built a portal to it. Everyone came through. The first Elder killed five of the seven; only Uggeli and Petteri stayed standing, and Petteri's arrows finished both.

All night long

The case of the missing blueberries

Blueberries kept vanishing from the base chests. spira, who spent the night feeding wild animals, was the obvious suspect.

  1. The suspect had a motive

    Monstrum's grizzlies and OdinHorse's horses both eat blueberries, and spira was taming a grizzly. spira dropped blueberries on the ground eight times tonight, 276 in all, mostly the same stacks picked up and dropped again.

  2. But the suspect never went near the berries in the chests

    The only thing spira took out of a chest all night was 24 coins. The bait came from spira's own bag, which held 56 blueberries at login, and the bushes on the hill.

  3. The cauldron did it

    With AzuCraftyBoxes, a cauldron pulls ingredients straight out of nearby chests. Going by the recipes in the game and mod files, the base cauldron used 193 blueberries tonight: Queen's Jam takes 6 per four jars, the healing and tasty mead bases 5 each, Wizardry's Berry Candy 4 and its Eitr Plate 2. 183 of those blueberries came out of the chests.

  4. Ten minutes at the cauldron

    From 22:00 to 22:10 Crusherina cooked 10 berry candies, 10 eitr plates and 15 jars of jam. That is 78 blueberries, and she had none in her bag. Candy and plates are Wizardry's eitr food, and she never equipped a staff all night. She ate them on her corpse run.

  5. Two generous Vikings

    Sfin, an experienced blueberry donator, put 78 back into the base chests and 7 at Haldor. And Uggeli seems to replace the blueberries he eats: at 18:45 and 19:34 he left 47 on the floor by the base chests. Spenglerian picked up every one.

Verdict

Crusherina, with Uggeli and PiÑa as accomplices. spira walks free, although 13 of spira's own berries did disappear in the horse pen, most likely into the grizzly or the horses.

Glory and shame

Server rule: you may bring an old character and old gear, and the others may tease you for it. Gear that helps the whole server is exempt, and a wolf cape is borderline because it keeps the cold away.

Portal-builder and questionable captain

Good at
Building and logistics: 426 pieces, an outpost at Haldor, and portals to Haldor, the altar and Petteri's ruin.
Bad at
Captaining: he capsized his crew 1.7 km from home.

Glory

  • Found the Elder's altar by boat, linked it to base and summoned both Elders.
  • Killed the Serpent with a fire bolt, then killed the Greydwarf Elite that had Uggeli and Sfin down to 10 and 12 health.
  • Most kills of the night and most building, including a 315-piece outpost at Haldor.
  • Rode his second horse 1.4 km in under four minutes to reach Petteri.

Shame

  • Capsized the Karve with Sfin and Uggeli aboard, which says a lot about his captaining. Three minutes earlier he had hit it with his own knife.
  • Put his first Karve on the wrong side of a low bridge and had to break it up three minutes later.
  • Clicked a bed 25 times in two minutes at 21:18.
  • Butchered four two-star horses in the pen at 20:20.

Sfin

First mate and trophy keeper

Good at
Sticking with the captain: 121 minutes within 40 m of Spenglerian, the closest pair of the night.
Bad at
Keeping his own clothes on. After two deaths he wore everyone else's.

Glory

  • Hung most of the night's trophies, including both Elder trophies.
  • Survived the second Elder on 3.8 health, drank a mead and kept shooting.
  • Experienced blueberry donator: 85 of them.
  • Left the chests 408 items richer than he found them, including 101 dandelions, 94 crossbow bolts and 15 chitin from the Leviathan.

Shame

  • Picked up two pufferfish on the Leviathan and was poisoned the same second.
  • Died twice to the first Elder, 42 seconds apart.
  • Re-dressed in other people's spares: Crusherina's rags and helmet, Uggeli's rag trousers, Spenglerian's leather armour, PiÑa's bronze helmet.

Woodcutter, miner and lone explorer

Hard work: 1,111 chopping and mining hits and 2,964 items picked up, both the most of anyone.
Bad at
Dressing for the occasion: rag trousers all night, and a rag tunic from 21:04.

Glory

  • Took a troll's club to 0.7 health at 18:49 and killed the troll two minutes later.
  • Opened 10 treasure chests, more than anyone, and went into two burial chambers and a troll cave past Haldor.
  • Went alone 1 km past Haldor to build a camp, and was online longest.
  • Put 15 arrows into the Serpent and never died to the Elder.
  • Seems to replace the blueberries he eats: he left 47 on the floor by the base chests, and Spenglerian picked up every one.

Shame

  • Cooked 32 blueberries out of the chests in two minutes, the second-biggest haul after Crusherina's.

PiÑa

The smith and the rescuer

Good at
Smithing: all 152 bronze bars the group made, two bronze armour sets and 100 nails.
Bad at
Fighting: the fewest kills of the night (28) and the least damage to the Elders (494).

Glory

  • Built a Karve from scratch and sailed 1.7 km to take three castaways off a Leviathan.
  • Fed the smelters 409 times and made 242 arrows and three horse saddles.
  • Last one on the server, building a walled shelter after midnight.

Shame

  • 898 “help” commands, all from the D-pad, and no one knows why. It's probably Petteri's fault.
  • Put the rescue Karve on the wrong side of the same low bridge that caught Spenglerian an hour earlier.
  • Died 8 times, 4 of them at the altar, once to the Elder's roots.
  • Took four swings at a smelter.
  • Cooked 30 blueberries out of the chests.

Archery: 413 arrows made, 9,384 damage to the Elders and both killing blows.
Bad at
Water, Heights (and anything else involving 3D space/navigation).

Glory

  • Landed the killing blow on both Elders and never died at the altar.
  • Did more damage to the Elders than the next two players put together.
  • Tore down a bridge so PiÑa could launch the rescue boat.
  • Asserted dominance by renaming Spenglerian's second horse Reiska.

Shame

  • Showed up in an old character's full kit: padded armour, wolf cape, Draugr Fang bow and frost arrows, with lox pies, sausages and medium meads in the bag. Given this level of try-hard, the glory of doing the most damage and not falling to the Elder is tarnished by sweat.
  • Then swam for base before eating anything and drowned in all of it, five minutes in.
  • Tore down the wrong bridge so PiÑa could launch the rescue boat.
  • Built a Karve on the roof of the base, 14 m above the sea. He and PiÑa shot it apart nine minutes later.
  • Fell 22 times for 196 damage, the most fall damage of anyone.
  • Hung cooked horse meat on two item stands at base.

Crusherina

Far-west explorer, outfitter and blueberry thief

Good at
Exploring and kitting others out: 98 new locations, and her gear on three other players.
Bad at
Leaving the blueberries alone.

Glory

  • Sailed further west than anyone, 2.7 km from base.
  • Ran 1.5 km for her grave, killing two dozen creatures and taking 148 coins from a shipwreck on the way.
  • Lived through a bear's swipe on 2.3 health at 19:46.
  • Her flint swords, bow, arrows and spare armour turned up on PiÑa, Sfin and Petteri.

Shame

  • The blueberry thief: 78 blueberries out of the chests in ten minutes, cooked into eitr food with no staff to use it on.
  • When the BetterSleepBruh speed-up bug broke her Karve 2.7 km out west, she tried to swim home and drowned.
  • Died twice to the Elders.

spira

Beast-tamer on the hill, and the biggest tryhard

Good at
Taming: a tame wolf, a tame grizzly, and a fenced pen for the bear at base.
Bad at
Staying alive: 17 deaths and 619 hits taken, more than twice anyone else.

Glory

  • Tamed a grizzly on the spot where one had killed spira three times in three minutes.
  • Third-most damage to the Elders.
  • Built 160 pieces on the hill, mostly mud road.
  • Cleared in the blueberry case: never took a berry out of a chest.
  • Refuses to give up on taming wolves.

Shame

  • A bigger tryhard than Petteri: padded armour, wolf cape, black metal shield, silver mace, Draugr Fang bow and lox meat. Still died 17 times, 8 of them to wolves.
  • Tried to pet a wild wolf in the middle of a wolf fight.
  • First to fall to the Elder, 47 seconds in.
